I reached Ginger Chennai, IITM at around 2 AM — after being dropped off by the cabbie, we struggled to locate this hotel (even in this age of Maps) that tucked away inside IITM Research Park on the 11th floor of the towering Research Park building near Tidel Park, Tharamani in Chennai. This wasn’t a standalone hotel tower — the rooms are part of a large multi-purpose office and innovation complex, which made the whole experience feel a bit different from your typical city hotel stay. Quite amazed when I approached the smiling welcoming receptionist, who did not appear sleepy.
The check-in process was smooth — exactly what you hope for after a long journey. The room was compact yet clean and comfortable, with basic amenities and a neat dining space on the same floor. With about 81 rooms spread out here along with a dining area, this setup felt quite unique compared to traditional hotels I’ve stayed at across the country.
The silence and greenery around the campus actually made that short sleep surprisingly restful.
Morning Inside the Campus
Morning came with sunlight filtering gently through trees and the soft murmur of early footsteps inside the campus. The atmosphere was peaceful — almost meditative — quite unlike the usual bustle you expect in a city like Chennai.
Breakfast at around 8:30 AM was one of the highlights. A well-spread breakfast with a mix of South Indian and familiar options felt just right — filling but not heavy. The spread was inclusive, it had something for all types of taste buds,
- Idli, Ragi Utappam (My first time), Dosa on demand
- Assorted breads/sandwiches
- Freshly cut fruits
- Chana Bhatura
- Assorted sprouts
- Tea, filter coffee and fruit juices omnipresent
Sitting there, overlooking the quiet campus greenery, was a pretty calm start before the day.
Soon after, I checked out and headed out for work.
From Calm Mornings to Industrial Chennai
My work took me out of central Chennai and into an industrial area — a complete contrast to the reserved ambience of IIT Madras. Long roads, neatly planned factories, some big some massive and the ceaseless hum of activity defined that side of the city.
This part of Chennai is all about function — early starts, tight schedules, and people on the move. The shift from silent campus mornings to a fast-paced work environment was striking yet real.
Final Thoughts
This trip wasn’t about sightseeing or hitting tourist spots. It was a work-oriented visit with a very short stay, but the experience still left its mark.
Staying at Ginger inside the IITM Research Park building gave me a peaceful pause before diving into a demanding workday. That balance — quiet night, good breakfast, and then straight into work — felt just right for a business trip.
Chennai doesn’t need tourist glam to be memorable. Even a brief night, paired with genuine local experiences, can stay with you long after you’ve left. A sip of filter coffee, just makes everything alright always.
